Why we’re building SafeClub
Safety warnings already exist. The problem is that they disappear.
Every student knows the warnings are out there. A voice note in a residence group about a club's back entrance. A post about a car that took the wrong route. A thread that gets shared a hundred times, then vanishes by the weekend.
The information exists. It just doesn't last, and it's never where you need it: at 01:00, new to the city, deciding which club to walk into or which car to get into.
Before, not after
Panic buttons matter, but they help after something has already gone wrong. SafeClub is built for the moment before — so the choice about where to go and how to get home is an informed one.
That means a lasting, searchable record the community owns: clubs rated on lighting, staff response, exits and overall safety; rides flagged by registration; safety pins on a map; and a sisterhood feed for the tips and the wins in between.
Built for the person holding the phone
We design for one person: a student out late, in a loud, dark room, one hand busy, maybe being watched, on a phone with little battery left. That's why SafeClub uses big targets, few words and a dark Night Mode that won't light up the room — and why privacy is the default rather than a setting you have to find.
Honest about what an app can do
SafeClub is a preventative, community-powered tool. It is not an emergency service and it can't guarantee anyone's safety. We say that plainly, in the app and here, because being straight with you is part of keeping you safe.
We're launching first on one partner campus in Johannesburg. If there's something you wish SafeClub did, tell us.
