Five things to do before a night out

Two minutes of planning that make the rest of the night easier to get home from.

Most of what keeps a night out safe happens before you leave. None of this is complicated, and none of it means staying in. It is the two minutes that make the rest of the night easier to get home from.

1. Tell one person where you're going — and when you'll be back

Not a group chat that scrolls away. One specific person who knows the club, who you're with, and roughly when you expect to be home. Agree what happens if they don't hear from you by then.

In SafeClub, this is what Night Mode is for: pick your accountable sisters and a return time, and switch on only what you want them to see.

2. Plan the ride home before you need it

Decide how you're getting home while you're still clear-headed. Check campus gate times — they change — and whether a friend is heading your way. Splitting a ride with people you know is better than waiting alone.

3. Check the plate before you get in

Match the registration, the car and the driver's details in the app before you open the door. Screenshot the plate and send it to your person. If anything doesn't match, don't get in.

4. Know your way out

When you arrive somewhere new, notice where the exits are and where the bathrooms are. Agree a meeting point with your friends in case you get separated and your phones die.

5. Charge your phone — and have a reason to leave ready

Leave with a full battery, or bring a power bank. And have an easy exit line ready: a fake call is a perfectly good reason to step outside. You don't owe anyone a polite silence.

If you are in immediate danger, call 10111 (South African Police Service) or your local emergency service. Planning helps, but it never replaces emergency help.
